7th Grade

  • English Language Arts

In seventh grade, English language arts instruction engages students in the increasingly sophisticated interpretation and creation of texts across a variety of genres and purposes. This subject emphasizes purposeful reading, writing, speaking, listening, creating, and viewing as students gain independence and refinement in their communication skills. Students interpret and construct texts with clarity and coherence, applying grammar conventions, including varied syntax, and precise vocabulary to enhance expression. Emphasis is placed on the recursive nature of writing, strategic revision, and the integration of credible sources. Collaborative discussions, inquiry and research projects, and multimodal presentations further support students in becoming thoughtful, strategic, and articulate communicators prepared for academic and real-world success. This subject must utilize the 6–8 standards and seventh grade expectations outlined in Georgia’s K–12 English Language Arts (ELA) Standards.

  • Math

Seventh grade mathematics course content regularly incorporates the 8 Mathematical Practices, the Framework for Statistical Reasoning, and the Mathematical Modeling Framework through four big ideas of content: (1) numerical reasoning, (2) probability reasoning, (3) patterning and algebraic reasoning, and (4) geometric and spatial reasoning. Students will build numerical reasoning skills through positive and negative number operations including all rational numbers in context then extend that learning to formally explore simple probability models to explain real-world phenomena. Students will build their algebraic reasoning skills to rewrite expressions, work with multistep equations and inequalities, and use proportional relationships to solve multistep percent problems, discover scale drawings using similar triangles to explain slope. Students will also explore geometric relationships involving area of a circle, volume of 3D shapes including cylinders, and exploring angle measure relationships. The fundamental purpose of Grade 7 mathematics is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the previous grades. Seventh grade standards use algebra to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The Mathematical Practices, Mathematical Modeling Framework and Framework for Statistical Reasoning apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

  • Science

The Seventh Grade Georgia Standards of Excellence for science are designed to give all students the necessary skills for a smooth transition from elementary life science standards to high school biology standards. The purpose is to give all students an overview of common strands in life science including, but not limited to, diversity of living organisms, structure and function of cells, heredity, ecosystems, and biological evolution. Seventh grade students keep records of their observations, use those records to analyze the data they collect, recognize patterns in the data, use simple charts and graphs to represent the relationships they see, and find more than one way to interpret their findings. They make and use observations to explain the diversity of living organisms and how the organisms are classified, how they reproduce and how genetic information is passed from parents to their offspring. They use different models to represent systems such as cells, tissues, and organs. They use what they know about ecosystems to explain how matter cycles and energy flows through the ecosystem. They use the concepts of natural selection and fossil evidence to construct explanations about the diversity of life that they see. Seventh graders plan and carry out investigations, describe observations, and show information in graphical form. The students replicate investigations and compare results to find similarities and differences.

  • Social Studies

Seventh grade is the second year of a two-year World Area Studies course. Seventh grade students study Africa and Asia. The goal of this two-year course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live. The geography domain includes both physical and human geography. The intent of the geography domain is for students to begin to grasp the importance geography plays in their everyday lives. The government/civics domain focuses on selected types of government found in the various areas in order to help students begin to understand the variety of governments in the world. The economics domain builds on the K-5 economics standards; however, the focus shifts from the United States to how other countries answer the basic questions of economics. The history domain focuses primarily on significant events in each region from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
